On to the Great Eclipse

We met Bob and Wendy at their house and were on the road at 7 am. It was Sunday, August 13th. Our plan was to reach the Grand Teton National Park by Tuesday afternoon, almost a week before the Total Solar Eclipse. Being Sunday morning, traffic was light and we made good time, stopping near Barstow for gas and a quick breakfast sandwich.

We soon crossed into Nevada and met heavy traffic in Las Vegas. The temperature was now in the low 100s as we passed Mesquite, crossed the northwest tip of Arizona, traversed the narrow Virgin Gorge and entered Utah. We pulled into the Willow Wind RV park in Hurricane at about 3:30 and set up our trailers parked next to each other. We had covered 420 miles our first day.

Our preparations on Monday morning took longer than expected.  I had to gas up the Escalade and stop in the local Walmart for some items.  We were on the road by 9:30 and headed up Interstate 15 toward Salt Lake City.  The views along this part of Idaho are breathtaking.  The red rock cliffs soon gave way to expansive vistas of golden grass plains with mountains far off to the east.

Passing train in central Utah

We stopped for lunch and gas at a truck stop in the middle of the state, and were soon on the road again.  Traffic was light for a Monday, but that soon changed as we entered Provo. The freeway widened and we experienced heavy traffic all the way through Salt Lake City and Ogden.  We pulled into the Century RV park, relieved to be off the road and set up our trailers for the evening.
